About the name Neha.
Neha comes from Hindi sneha, affection or love, with the initial s worn away in ordinary speech. The Sanskrit sneha originally meant oiliness or a smooth greasy substance, and the metaphorical shift into tenderness happened early enough that no modern speaker hears the literal sense at all. A second derivation, from words for rain or dew, circulates widely online but has much weaker support. Two syllables, NAY-ha, with an audible h in the middle. In India the name belonged emphatically to the 1980s and 1990s and now sounds like a name from that decade, and the American curve traces the same arc a few years behind: a strong peak either side of 2000 and a steady decline since.
Soft, unpretentious and slightly dated in the way any name tied to one decade eventually becomes. The breathy h in the middle keeps it gentle rather than clipped. Nehu is the affectionate household form and is used well into adulthood, which is not true of most Hindi diminutives.
Most popular around 2000. Based on US birth records.

Questions about the name Neha
What does Neha mean? +
Love or affection, from Sanskrit sneha by way of Hindi. The original sense of sneha was oiliness or smoothness, and the shift to tenderness is an old and well-attested metaphor. The rain or dew explanation has far less behind it.
Is Neha still popular? +
No. It peaked in India in the late 1980s and 1990s and has fallen sharply since, so most Nehas are now in their thirties or forties. The name has not become unusable, but it is now rarely given to babies in either country.
How is it pronounced? +
NAY-ha, with the h fully sounded rather than swallowed. English speakers often produce NEE-ha, which changes the vowel and is by far the most common mispronunciation. Stress falls on the first syllable in both languages.
What nicknames go with Neha? +
Nehu is the most used and survives into adult friendships. Nee is the quick English clip. Since the name is already two short syllables, families are likelier to add a suffix than remove anything, which is the usual pattern for Hindi names this size.
