About the name Fatima.
Fatima comes from an Arabic root meaning to wean, and is usually glossed as one who weans or one who abstains. The name belongs to Fatima al-Zahra, the Prophet's daughter and the wife of Ali, which makes it the single most significant female name in Islam and one of the few points where Sunni and Shia veneration line up closely. It then took an improbable detour. A Portuguese village named, by tradition, after a Moorish girl became a Marian pilgrimage site after reported apparitions in 1917, and Catholic families across Portugal, Brazil and Latin America have used the name ever since. Very few names sit that centrally in two religions with so little else in common.
Weighty and formal, more so than most three-syllable names, because of who carries it. It is not a name that invites teasing in any of the communities that use it. Fati is the standard clip across the Arab world, Tima takes the ending, and Fifi is the Egyptian household form.
Most popular around 2000. Based on US birth records.

Questions about the name Fatima
What does Fatima mean? +
One who weans, from the Arabic verb meaning to wean or separate. Tradition extends this to one who abstains, and reads it devotionally as one kept from the fire. It is a participle rather than an abstract noun, which is unusual for a female name.
Why is the name used by Catholics? +
Because of the village of Fátima in Portugal, named by tradition after a Moorish girl who converted after the Reconquista. Reported Marian apparitions there in 1917 made it a major pilgrimage site, and Our Lady of Fátima carried the name into Catholic families worldwide.
What spellings exist? +
Fatima and Fatimah are standard, Fatma is usual in Turkey and Egypt, and Fatoumata and Fatou are the West African developments. Fátima with the accent is the Portuguese and Spanish form and shifts the stress onto the first syllable.
What are the short forms? +
Fati is used across the Arab world and North Africa, and Tima takes the ending instead. Fifi is a common Egyptian household nickname. In Senegal and the Gambia, Fatou has stopped being a clip at all and works as a full name.
