The turn came from books. Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960 under what was in fact her family's surname, and when American parents began raiding surnames for daughters in the 2000s hers was sitting there ready. Numbers were negligible before 1995 and top ten by 2015. The rise was quick enough that the name still reads new, and quick enough that no nickname culture has had time to form around it.
