About the name Ishaan.

Ishaan is one of the many names of Shiva, and it also names a direction: in the Vastu system of Indian architecture the ishaan corner is the northeast, the auspicious one, where a household's prayer room is supposed to sit. The Sanskrit īśāna means ruler or lord, from the root īś, to own or command, and it doubles as an epithet of the sun. Pronounced ee-SHAAN, both vowels long, stress at the back. Indian parents took it up during the 1990s and 2000s as part of the same move toward short Sanskrit names that produced Vihaan, and the two spellings Ishaan and Ishan now compete directly in American records.

Authoritative without being heavy, helped by the long open aa that lets the name carry across a room. It ages well, which not every fashionable Sanskrit name manages to do. Ish is the standard clip and reads slightly cheeky; Ishu is the family version and rarely leaves the house.

Questions about the name Ishaan

What does Ishaan mean? +

Ruler or lord. The Sanskrit īśāna is an epithet of Shiva and belongs to the same word family as īśvara, supreme lord. It also names the northeast direction, which traditional Indian architecture reserves for worship.

Ishaan or Ishan? +

One name, two transliterations of the same long vowel. Ishaan makes the length explicit for English readers; Ishan follows the plainer convention. Indian passports carry both, and families sometimes end up using different spellings for siblings without noticing.

How do you pronounce it? +

ee-SHAAN, stress on the second syllable, both vowels held. The English rendering ISH-un shortens both and drags the stress forward, which native speakers will recognise but generally let pass. The sh is the ordinary English sound.

What are the short forms? +

Ish is the everyday clip and works well in English. Ishu is the affectionate household form. Shaan, taking the back half rather than the front, is used by a minority and is a full name in its own right, which makes it a slightly awkward choice.
