Priya is the feminine form of the Sanskrit adjective priya, which means dear or beloved, and it works the same way in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Nepali. Because it is an ordinary word before it is a name, a Hindi speaker hears it roughly the way an English speaker hears Grace. Say it PREE-yah, two syllables, with a light r that taps the roof of the mouth rather than curling back behind it.
