About the name Rahul.
Rahul was the Buddha's son, and the story attached to the name is faintly uncomfortable. The Pali Rāhula is traditionally read as fetter or impediment, and the texts have the Buddha name the child that on hearing of his birth, because a son was one more tie binding him to the world. Indian parents adopting the name in the twentieth century largely did so without that gloss in mind, and baby-name lists now print efficient or capable instead. Pronounced ruh-HOOL, stress on the second syllable. It ran extremely hot in India from the late 1970s through the 1990s, helped considerably by Shah Rukh Khan playing several separate characters of that name, and has cooled just as sharply since.
A 1990s name in India the way Jason is a 1970s name in America: everywhere at once, then abruptly nowhere. It is smooth and warm in the mouth and carries no edge at all. Rahu is the affectionate clip, though it doubles as the name of a mythological shadow planet.

Questions about the name Rahul
Does Rahul really mean fetter? +
The Pali Rāhula is traditionally read that way, and the Buddhist texts stage the naming as a comment on attachment. Whether the Buddha said any such thing is unknowable. Modern Indian usage ignores the etymology entirely and treats the name as simply pleasant.
Why was it so common in the 1990s? +
The name was already fashionable and Hindi cinema then hammered it. Shah Rukh Khan played characters called Rahul in several of the decade's biggest films, and a generation of boys born between 1985 and 2000 is the result.
What are the nicknames? +
Rahu is the standard household clip, despite sharing its form with a figure from Hindu astrology. Ru and Rah circulate among friends. Plenty of families use the full name throughout, since two syllables leaves very little worth cutting.
Is it a Buddhist name? +
By origin yes, in practice not really. Rahul is used across Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist families with no religious signal attached, much as Western parents use biblical names without intending anything. Twentieth-century Indian interest in Buddhism did give it an early push.
