About the name Vihaan.
Vihaan is one of the clearest examples of a genuinely new Indian name. The Sanskrit vihāna means dawn, or the first light before sunrise, but the word sat unused until Indian parents in the 2000s went hunting for short, vowel-open names that their own grandparents had not already claimed. Within roughly fifteen years it went from nowhere to the top of Indian baby-name lists, and its American curve after 2010 is close to vertical. Pronounce it vih-HAAN, stress on the long second syllable, with a breathy h in the middle that English speakers tend to swallow. There is no long history to inherit here, which for a great many families is precisely the attraction.
Modern by design: two syllables, no consonant cluster, and easy for a non-Indian colleague to manage on the first attempt. That was more or less the brief. It reads fresh rather than inherited, and the long aa gives it a resonance that shorter picks in the same wave never quite achieve.
Most popular around 2020. Based on US birth records.

Questions about the name Vihaan
What does Vihaan mean? +
Dawn, or the first light before sunrise. The Sanskrit vihāna is a real but uncommon word, which is part of the appeal: parents get an authentic meaning without inheriting a name that half the extended family already carries.
Vihaan or Vivaan? +
Different names that rose together and are confused constantly. Vivaan is usually glossed as full of life, or the first rays of the sun, and both have spent time near the top of Indian charts. Registrars report frequent corrections between the two.
How new is the name? +
Very. It is almost absent from Indian records before 2000 and barely appears in American data before 2010, then climbs sharply. Anyone named Vihaan is with near certainty a child or a young adult, which is an unusual degree of certainty for a name.
Are there nicknames? +
Vihu is the standard affectionate form in Hindi-speaking homes, following the ordinary -u pattern. Vi works abroad. Because the name was picked for its shortness in the first place, many families use it whole and never develop a clipped version.
